illusion of safety | | | |
Dan
Burke, the mind behind the influent project Illusion Of Safety,
has been active since 1983. Distanced from the obscure sounds of a very recent
past, which catalogue of sound schizophrenia included ambient, post-industrial,
electro-acoustic, electronic, sound collage, improvisation, sampling and power
electronics, juxtaposition of the beauty and the disturbing still remains as
the way chosen to the sublime. Never remaining for too long within the same
genre, not even during the same track, his work still evolves towards a more
organic electro acoustic. Occasionally distressing through the destruction of
the sound itself or of its sometimes obscure sources, this is a music which
displays a strong feeling of balance within its structure and sound colours.
Despite less threatening, the virus is still active in the digital circuits
of IOS, reconfiguring sounds on the dangerous language of error. Fascinating
and unclassifiable, this project hasn’t lost the strength of a surrealistic
distillation which as always marked its work, a powerful mixture of originality,
innovation and provocation; the essence of experimental music that is.

Through
the fractured sound of these softened textures, there is persistence in the
misleading usage of technology. Flaws, defects and sound deconstructions are
the strategic base of the digital construction of Dan Burke.
Decomposition
is one of the central ideas of the work this artist. Loops, collages, processed
fragments of melodies, manipulated techno, voices, guitars, concrete arrhythmia,
abrupt inflections and saturated juxtapositions. From the mini-tracks to the
long and powerful drones which evolve from their erroneous digital textures.
In
the end, a distant crow which reminds that the machine is still haunted…
and that time is over.
